
Jazmine Laura Sullivan was born and was raised within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam was once a backup singer for Philadelphia International Records. When she was five Her father was named as the city's Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. The family then moved into this historical building. In 2005, she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in the class of a vocal music major. Sullivan was first singing in the kids' chorus as a contralto, and then she joined the adult chorus just a few years after that. Sullivan was not exposed to secular music. She recalls that she was just 11 years old when a person asked her to sing solos in church. However, she was not enough yet to be ready. "Then McDonald's offered a competition to children from major cities. It gave me the chance to perform the Grace of God on Showtime Apollo. My audience was very enthusiastic." The singer performed along with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday at the age of thirteen. Sullivan was the first to sign her contract with Jive Records when she was 15. The label recorded her the entire album but the album was never released. Sullivan was eventually removed from the record label. Her work had been in good relations along with Missy Elliott. Elliott produced some of her tracks and tracks, such as "Backstabbers" that was written by Timbaland.
